Fundraising for the Meningitis Research Foundation!

My name is Aimee Owen, and I am a third-year Law student at the University of Reading. Through my studies, I have developed a particular interest in health inequalities and how they disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. This has strongly influenced my choice to support the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Participating in the Kilimanjaro trek allows me to combine a significant personal challenge with the opportunity to raise both awareness and funds for a cause that I consider deeply important.

About the Fundraising Initiative

I am currently raising funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation as part of the UK Kilimanjaro 2026 Student Trek, which I will be undertaking in August 2026. My fundraising target is £3,380, and all donations will directly support the charity’s work in advancing research, improving early detection, and providing vital support for individuals and families affected by meningitis.

About Meningitis and Why It Matters

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, most commonly caused by bacterial or viral infection. It can progress extremely quickly and can be fatal within hours. Survivors may face lifelong consequences such as hearing loss, limb loss, seizures, or learning difficulties.

Raising awareness is crucial because early recognition and treatment save lives. The Meningitis Research Foundation works to improve diagnosis, support affected families, and fund research aimed at prevention. These efforts are vital not only for those directly impacted but also for building safer, more informed communities.

What the Kilimanjaro Trek Involves

The Kilimanjaro trek is a demanding multi-day ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The challenge requires significant physical preparation and involves trekking through diverse climates and terrain, from rainforest to alpine desert, before attempting the final summit at nearly 6,000 metres. It is an undertaking designed to challenge participants both physically and mentally while raising substantial support for charitable causes across the UK.

Purpose of the Trek and Fundraising

By taking part in the UK Kilimanjaro 2026 Student Trek, I hope to contribute meaningfully to the fight against meningitis through both awareness and fundraising. Every donation, big or small, helps me move closer to my goal and directly supports the charity’s essential work.

I would be very happy to provide photographs, a link to my fundraising page, or any further details that might be helpful for preparing the blog post or for social media.

Thank you once again for your support and for offering to highlight this initiative.
