Our Lady has moved!

We have moved our Lady at St Edward’s to a different position. She is now up front and centre in the side chapel and can be seen much better from other areas of the church.

The response seems to be very positive so far!

Let’s hear from Aimee, a member of our parish, who is undertaking a very important and ambitious project in order to raise money for Meningitis research.

‘My name is Aimee Owen, and I am a third-year Law student at the University of Reading. Through my studies, I have developed a particular interest in health inequalities and how they disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. This has strongly influenced my choice to support the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Participating in the Kilimanjaro trek allows me to combine a significant personal challenge with the opportunity to raise both awareness and funds for a cause that I consider deeply important.’

If you’re currently a member of the congregation sat inside Holy Cross Church this morning, you might feel something in common with this mop and bucket that was accidentally left outside the resource centre overnight… both are freezing! 🥶 😂

The boilers in the church are being replaced in the next few weeks, which means the heating is not currently working. We’ve got the electric heaters going on overdrive, but if you are attending Mass at HC in the next few days, best to wear an extra layer, or 5!

… or arrive early to get a spot next to a heater! 😂

This week’s Voice from the Parish is Melanie, who is a volunteer at Holy Cross Resource Centre.

‘My name is Melanie , I attend mass at Holy Cross church.

I volunteer at the church.

‘I’ve been a street pastor in Eastleigh for 9 years .

I took on the role to help others but I often reflect on what street pastoring has give me.

The training was extremely professional and has been beneficial to me in many life situations.

I go out with a great group of volunteers from local churches who care for and support each other.

I find myself at the receiving end of sincere gratitude from those we have helped over the years and at the end of an evening I regularly thank God for all the blessings in my own life.

I have personally found the role very rewarding and would encourage others from our churches to find out more and consider going out with a team in Eastleigh as an observer to see if it’s for you.

St Joseph’s church in Romsey had the pleasure of welcoming Fr Donato to his first ever Sunday Mass in England!

Fr Donato is from the same fraternity that all of our wonderful parish priests are from. He is visiting for a week, and is giving a talk this very evening in the Holy Cross resource centre, followed by Mass in Holy Cross church.

We are all part of an amazing community at St Swithun Wells parish, so do join in giving a lovely warm welcome to Fr Donato if you see him!

Today, we are having a look inside our beautiful Holy Cross Church in Eastleigh!

In the 1880’s, Eastleigh was established as an important railway junction. Large tracts of land were bought for carriage/locomotive works. In 1886, Bishop Virtue purchased land in Leigh Road for a future Church. Some years later a tin School/Church was erected known as Our Lady of Good Counsel.

At the turn of the century came the prospect of a new Church. In 1901 the Bishop was able to report that a lady (Miss Ward) had promised to build a Church at her expense. Canon Scoles was commissioned to prepare the plans for the building to be erected under the title and invocation of the Holy Cross. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Cahill on the feast of Holy Cross in 1901. The new Church was consecrated on the 13th August 1902. An account of the opening was given in the Eastleigh Weekly News with a list of the priests and ‘notables’ present.

In 1903, a new school was opened next to the Church. An anonymous benefactor provided the funds required after previous unsuccessful attempts to raise the money.

In 1921, Father Doran purchased two cottages next to the Church and made them into a presbytery.

The Church was enlarged by Father Power in 1962. He was also responsible for persuading the Sisters of Our Saviour and The Blessed Virgin to come to Eastleigh. At the same time, Fair Oak began to expand, previously the few catholic families there went to Bishop Waltham or Holy Cross. The first mass was said at the Acorn Club and thereafter at the Village Hall. In 1978, a new Church was opened and dedicated to Swithun Wells – a local martyr.

Local Scout Sets Sights on the World Stage — Help Joshua Reach the 2027 World Scout Jamboree!

Twelve-year-old Joshua from Waltham Chase is embarking on the adventure of a lifetime — raising funds to represent Bishops Waltham at the World Scout Jamboree in 2027. As one of the youngest participants selected to attend, Joshua is determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity to meet Scouts from around the world, experience new cultures, and bring home unforgettable skills and stories.

Attending the World Scout Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brings together tens of thousands of Scouts from over 150 countries. For Joshua, it’s not just about travel — it’s about teamwork, leadership, and representing Hampshire on a global stage. A dedicated member of Denewulf Scout Group, Joshua is also working towards his Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement for a Scout of his age. Local Scout Sets Sights on the World Stage — Help Joshua Reach the 2027 World Scout Jamboree!

Twelve-year-old Joshua from Waltham Chase is embarking on the adventure of a lifetime — raising funds to represent Bishops Waltham at the World Scout Jamboree in 2027. As one of the youngest participants selected to attend, Joshua is determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity to meet Scouts from around the world, experience new cultures, and bring home unforgettable skills and stories.

Attending the World Scout Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brings together tens of thousands of Scouts from over 150 countries. For Joshua, it’s not just about travel — it’s about teamwork, leadership, and representing Hampshire on a global stage. A dedicated member of Denewulf Scout Group, Joshua is also working towards his Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement for a Scout of his age. As a committed Scout he takes part in weekly meetings, local parades, camps, and community service projects — including litter picks and charity events — all while balancing school and his fundraising efforts.

Mary’s Meals is a UK-based charity, who raise money to provide lifechanging meals to some of the world’s poorest children. Mary’s Meals is currently serving over 3 million children in communities where hunger and poverty would prevent children from gaining an education.

Throughout November there will be a collection box in every church in the parish collecting any type of currency, from any country, old or new, coins or notes.

St Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mother and was betrothed to Mary at the time of Jesus’ birth. All that is known of him for certain is contained in the accounts of the birth and early life of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

He was of David’s line and was a carpenter in Nazareth where he lived with Mary and Jesus during Jesus’ early life. Devotion to him developed over the years particularly with the increasing popularity of representations of the Holy Family.

Pope Pius IX declared him Patron of the Universal Church at the close of the First Vatican Council in 1870. His feast-day is 19th March.
